Concert in Saigal's homage

FOURTEEN YEARS is an exceptionally short span of professional life for any artiste to become a legend, but Kundan Lal Saigal with the genius of his voice and acting talent became a legend in his own lifetime and reigned supreme in Indian cinema until his death on January 18, 1947.

Born on April 4, 1904, in Jammu, Saigal started his film career with the New Theatres in Calcutta in 1932. Despite his very first three-in-a-row flop movies, Saigal became a legendary singing star with the release of "Devdas" in 1935. Saigal sang from his soul and the sheer power of his voice drove his listeners to tears.

The year 2004-2005 is being celebrated as Saigal's birth centenary year. In memory of the legend, a three-part programme titled "Kundan" is planned by ardent Saigal lovers in the Capital. The first of these programmes is the release of an inimitable and thoroughly researched biography on Saigal in Hindi and English by Sharad Dutt. The book is based on recorded personal interviews by the author with the living and bygone greats who worked with - or were in close contact - Saigal and will be embellished with rare photographs, film booklets, posters and many valuable visions depicting the life and times of Saigal.

To coincide with Saigal's birth centenary as well as the launch of his biography, a great musical concert is planned where present day singers and musicians from Bollywood will bring him back alive at Siri Fort Auditorium, singing immortal ghazals of Ghalib, Zauq and Seemab.

The event will be telecast as well as webcast live.

Subsequently, every year on April 4, "Kundan" live concert will be held in memory of the legend. This concert will showcase the most famous as well as budding singers and will be held in different cities across India.
