A momentous event

HE IS one man who has been forever under the spell of the legendary singer K.L. Saigal. Make no mistake about it, P. Parameswaran Nair goes to great lengths to emulate his musical hero.

And sing his songs whenever possible. His first concert was conducted at the Lotus Club in Kochi in 1985. Since then there has been no looking back and he has given at least 150 public performances during the past decade.

Everybody in these parts would have heard about Mr. Nair's magnificent Saigal obsession because he worked at the Cochin Shipyard, from where he retired as Deputy General Manager in 1996.

His crowning moment of glory came when he was invited by the K.L. Saigal Memorial Trust at Jalandhar (Saigal's native place) to perform before the then Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, a few years ago.

Now he is overwhelmed that the Environment Society of India has chosen to honour him at the birth centenary celebrations of Saigal to be organised on April 3 in Chandigarh. A momentous event for a Saigal fan indeed.
