Great expectations
AN UNEASY calm seems to prevail in the Malayalam film industry after mediatory talks initiated by the Government failed to bridge the gap between the warring factions. Business was usual in Kochi city with studios busy giving final touches to forthcoming releases. Actors returned to work as the Vishu releases are expected to hit theatres according to schedule.
Despite witnessing signs of normalcy, industry observers compare the situation to a volcano that could erupt anytime. The Kerala Film Chamber's decision not to recognise the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has sparked off silent protests among several artistes. But they have decided not to go on a collision course with the Chamber at least for quite sometime.
The Chamber has in one way emerged stronger with its representatives making it clear that there was no crisis in the industry. The Chamber had categorically said that its objective is to bring in a sense of discipline in the industry. The trade body had also pointed out that its aim was to help hundreds of producers, distributors and exhibitors.
With Vishu releases getting ready, the warring factions have taken a break with expectations that the new releases would bring back peace to the industry.
