A serious take on politics

THE INDIAN small screen's most popular comedian is ready for a serious take on politics. Giving the audience food for thought this election in his trademark style would be actor Shekhar Suman. Roped in by Star News for a special news programme that will that will be taking a look at the top political happenings of the day, this will be the first time that the actor will be seen in a news programme.

And although Star News is not the first news channel to present heavy news in a lighter vein, it denies that the show was set up to counter the spoof show running on other news channels.

"The programme has been designed keeping in mind the channel's element of news. It is a completely different spin on the elections. It was not born out of the compulsion to present such a programme but out of the compulsion to give a different perspective to the audience,'' is how the director of Star news, Ravina Raj Kohli, puts it.

According to the Star News head, the idea was to start a show that could speak the viewer's mind and say things a reporter or a correspondent cannot. And although Shekhar Suman is known to take on some of the biggest politicians in the country in his shows, the channel insists that the show is a completely new thing for the actor too.

"It is not a comedy or a spoof. It is an election programme, a show with political satire. Shekhar would be giving the day's political news and adding his own comments. It is a programme that will be shot every day and focus on the day's hot topics. And it is not celebrity-centred. We needed some one who was good at wit and comedy. Shekhar has a feel for politics and is brilliant which is why he has been chosen,'' says Star News editor and director of news, Uday Shankar.
