Recent moves to enforce rights over songs, including film songs, by putting a check on their being rendered in public by anyone who takes a fancy to them, have raised questions relating to free artistic expression on the one hand, and intellectual property rights on the other. The demands, based on the regulations of the Indian Performance Rights Society (IPRS), and seemingly in line with international trends in the field, have drawn furious protests as well as strident statements in defence.
