Parting shot

Congress workers in the State heaved a sigh of relief when the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, closed ranks with the Chief Minister, A.K. Antony, immediately after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr. Karunakaran vowed not to make any public remarks against the Government and added that his criticism was meant only to guide Mr. Antony in the right direction.

However, while inaugurating the 39th annual conference of Secretariat employees in the city on Tuesday, he trained his guns on the Government in the presence of the Information and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M.M. Hassan, and the Rural Development Minister, C.F. Thomas.

Mr. Karunakaran did not spare Mr. Hassan and said that most Ministers lacked direction, Mr. Hassan being no exception. His parting shot - the declaration of his resolve to join hands with the Government employees to fight against the Government - came as a rude jolt to the Ministers present.
