SULTAN AHMED Ismail, managing director of Chennaibased Ecoscience Research Foundation, and an expert on vermicomposting technologies, may not be having many projects at hand in his home State of Tamil Nadu, but is being invited by other States and foreign countries.
Recently returned from Russia, where the Green-pik Corporation invited him as the only representative from India, Dr. Ismail was among other experts from the U.S., Europe and South Africa and Russia. He participated in the discussions on visiting the composting unit at Kovrov. "They are doing a good work at producing compost manure and the Government is encouraging purchase of compost," he says.
Presenting a paper on composting activities in India, Dr. Ismail also gave lectures to university and school students on `Vermitech - An Indian Earthworms Eyeview.' His book on `Vermicology' is being translated into Russian.
Dr. Ismail was also invited by the Department of Agriculture, Sultanate of Brunei. He was in charge of a project on solid waste management, producing vermicompost and applying it to the soil and producing vegetables. Following the completion of the project, the technology has been transferred. He is now proceeding to Chandigarh, to create awareness on ecology and composting, as part of a project of the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Government.
