Truthful portraits
APPRECIATING ART, as any art critic will tell you, goes far beyond enjoying artistically arranged pretty colours and images. The power of art lies not in its surface beauty but in its quality of inducing self-reflection. The motivation, themes, and ideas behind a work can reveal something to us about ourselves, a kind of inner truth. As the Polish sculptress, Magdalena Abakanowicz, put it, "Art opens our eyes to see and our brain to imagine."
This is the purpose behind "Truth," an exhibition of oil paintings by Suzanne Lloyd. Nothing is hazy or unclear about Suzanne's style. She uses bright colours in bold designs to convey an impression of viewing the basic, unadulterated image. The viewer is faced only with the bare-faced reality of the painting on the canvas.
Suzanne studied art at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat and has a Master's of Fine Art in painting from the College of Fine Arts, Bangalore. She has also studied at the Lalit Kala Academy on a scholarship. The highlight of the exhibition is a self-portrait of the artist, a challenging exercise in truthful self-reflection for Suzanne. She said, "Painting is an entirely magical process for me that begins with the end, and ends with the beginning."
"Truth" will be on show in the ground floor gallery of the Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, Thimmaiah Road, from April 1 to April 7.
