Act of `more' mercy

DIL MAANGE More? Yet another summer. More thirst. And yet another act of mercy from the guys from Unwind Centre. More it was. And with a lot of masala.

What more can one ask for in summer? Tamil `more,' of course.

So hundreds of Chennaiites quenched their thirst and beat the heat with `more' energy, thanks to the 1500 litres of `moru' distributed on May Day all around the city.

The annual event was a massive exercise in community service as volunteers hit the roads with 500 ml pet bottles and offered cups to thirsty commuters. Seven hundred litres were distributed through cups on Nelson Manickam Road.

And eight hundred litres were packed in bottles and put into three cars that went around the city. One car went along the Poonamallee High Road and the volunteers distributed buttermilk till Central station. Another covered T.Nagar and Adyar areas and the third car hit Mount Road and Royapettah.

Policemen smiled. Pedestrians were taken by surprise. Commuters who initially thought it was a clever marketing gimmick slowed down to get a taste of service. The people who put the smiles on the public were the happiest lot - the young and enthusiastic Unwind Centre volunteers. Just the previous evening, they got together to make the curd and cut the chillies. It was a session of bonding and fun. "On Saturday morning, we added water, salt, chilli and ginger to the curd. We then did the bottling and attached a tag saying `Small Things Done in Great Love,'" says Lijin of Unwind Centre.

The annual event was executed with proceeds from the Live 1o1 series of concerts and with contributions from the music loving volunteers of the Centre.

The Moru Masala distribution is just one of the Acts of Mercy projects undertaken by the Unwind gang. Their biggest fund-raiser and most significant event in their calendar, the June Rock Out festival, starts early this year.
