Nihalani's appeal

WHEN DIRECTOR Govind Nihalani made ``Ardh Satya'', it created quite a stir across the country with the media -- both national as well as regional -- going into the merits and demerits of alternate cinema. Nearly two decades later, the director who believes in the alternate genre of film-making hopes that the same would happen to his film ``Dev'' which is due for release this June.

"I hope the film will be written and discussed about with the same seriousness with which Ardh Satya was received,'' says Nihalani, adding: "My film has mainstream stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Fardeen Khan and Om Puri who have worked for nearly half their rates because they believe in the storyline of the film and in my genre of film-making.''

In fact, Amitabh Bachchan had in an interview a couple of years ago hailed Nihalani as the best director he had ever come across. With such adulation coming from the Big B, Nihalani hopes that the media would do justice to his film. "Ask what prompted Amitabh and Kareena to work for my film? Go into the details rather than sticking to gossip like what happened on the sets between Kareena and Fardeen,'' he points out.

Though he refuses to divulge the storyline of the film, the seasoned director says that the film revolves around the subject of communalism, a topic shrouded in secrecy. Not very many film-makers are willing to make a film on the subject. "The media can tear me to pieces, I do not care. Let them write a critical review. But please go into the details and then do your job'' is what he pleads.

Well, now that the film is almost ready for release and its promos are on in various channels, Nihalani's appeal is well worth consideration. And one hopes that the media will not present the whole truth regarding the making of ``Dev'', in all fairness to its director and not present "Ardh Satya''.
