KOCHI IS all set to join the big league of tourism when the proposed Marina in Bolghatty island takes shape. The Union Government has already given the green signal for the project in Kochi, which is said to be one of the best natural ports in the Asian region and an ideal spot for vessels that originate in the Gulf and cruise towards the Far East. The marina will have facilities to host up to 50 vessels at a time.
Besides berthing facility, the Marina will have fuel stations, repair stations, multi-storey club house complex, swimming pool, sports bar and jet skiing facility, open area for boat shows, food courts, restaurants, shopping malls, paved road ways and landscaped garden.
The Rs. 24-crore mega tourism project has already got the Central Government sanction of Rs. 4 crores and more are in the pipeline, the authorities say. The project is to come up on a five-acre land with all facilities for international cruise liners and yachts that pass by Kochi. The idea is to tap the large number of luxury yachts that pass through the area at present and to develop Kochi as a major tourist destination for the seafaring community. It is pointed out that there is no intermediate berthing place for these luxury vessels from the Gulf to the Far East.
The infrastructure facility comprises electric connections, and pumping out of sewage through sludge pump. A sewage treatment plant would also be set up and for drinking water, purification and filtering plants would be set up. Cooking gas will be stored in bulk and given through outlets with filling heads.
According to State Tourism Department sources, the marina is a prestigious project that could attract foreign exchange. The complete pontoon jetty will be made in marine quality glue laminated yellow agathis for docking cross-ties, rotational moulded polyethylene pontoons fitted with expanded polystyrenes, dock cleats, fasteners, dock fenders, utility covers and galvanised steel dock bolts. The deck will accommodate all the pipelines for supply of fuel, water, gas and electricity.
The pumping mains will also be laid below the deck.
The marina will have a wet dock and gallery with equipment and machines to carry out repair works. The marina will have two luxury cruisers and five jet skis.
The shore will be protected by constructing 750-m length of rubble retaining walls with coconut pile foundation. Area lighting and sufficient parking area for vehicles will also be provided.
According to KINFRA sources, the equity part of the project will be made up through contribution by the Union Government, the State Government, and a joint venture partner. Financial projections show that the project will break even in six years with a debt component of 25 per cent. The KSIDC is considering extending a loan to the project.
