Call not on line!

AN OBNOXIOUS call made by a trickster to the helpline phone meant for debt-ridden farmers has troubled an officer and embarrassed a farmer in Mushampally, near Nalgonda.

A person, who made a call to the helpline set up at the Collectorate last week, introduced himself as Sk. Ramjan, son of Imam Sahib and resident of Mushampally.

He gave a detailed account of `huge debts' he incurred to meet agricultural expenses.

"Sir, I borrowed Rs.3 lakhs from moneylenders with high hopes on orange and mango orchards I am raising in a five-acre strip of land. Now, I am in deep distress following crop failure and mounting debt burden. You must help me out by lending a helping hand,'' he appealed to the official who received the call.

Moved by the plight of Ramjan, the officer sent a report to the Mandal Revenue Officer concerned asking him to rush to Mushampally to meet the farmer.

The MRO knocked at the door of Ramjan and counselled him to boost his morale. The embarrassed farmer, who owns 16-acre land, told the MRO that he did not make any call to the helpline. "Though it is true that I borrowed Rs. 2 lakhs for my agricultural purposes, I am not in debt-related distress. My family members are earning Rs. 12,000 per month. Why should I approach the helpline when I am confident enough to repay debts?'' he questioned.

Bemused by the incident, the MRO sent a report to the Revenue Divisional Officer, Suresh Babu, writing it off as an obnoxious call.

"We believe that it might be a hoax call made by a mischievous person. We do not know whether the moneylenders are resorting to such tactics with the hope of getting their money back,'' the RDO said on Saturday.
