Vrooming on the track

FOR THE sports-starved people of this hill resort, a treat came by recently in the form of Autocross, thanks to Pollachi Motor Sports Club (PMSC).

Going beyond the expectations of a large number of locals and tourists, the event turned out to be a very exciting one.

The spectators in the galleries, and even those atop buses enjoyed every moment of the almost daylong show.

Since a motorsport event of this nature was being staged in Ooty after ten years, it naturally generated a great deal of interest.

Weaving through a 350-metre `dirt track' laid out for the event, the riders exhibited riding skills of a high order, repeatedly applauded by those present.

The thrills sent the men, women and children into raptures. Sponsored by Pepsi, Amco Batteries, Black Thunder and Roots Horns, Autocross was flagged off by the Ooty MLA, H.M.Raju.

With 90-odd riders from Kerala, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Pollachi, Erode and Ooty vying for honours, Syed Zubair, a `wild card' entry from Bangalore rode to glory by emerging victorious in the Novice, Experts and Open Class categories.

Visibly happy at the day having passed without a hitch, the secretary of the PMSC, T. Ravichandran, an ex-champion two-wheeler rallyist himself said that the conditions here were ideal for the sport and the participants were able to perform to the maximum without getting very tired.

Stating that it should become an annual feature here, he said, "we want to organise a National Motocross in Ooty during September this year".
