Training `em young
Eight summer training camps, 5,000 NCC cadets.... The aim: to select the very best among them as unit teams for participation in the Republic Day camp and the `Thal sainik' camp through inter-institution participation.
The last of these camps will conclude on Friday at the St. Xavier's College, Thumba and at the Pangode Military Centre. Apart from training the cadets on various NCC-related activities, the camps also provided training on various social service activities and community development programmes including blood donation, planting of trees and providing of assistance to AIDS patients at the SAT hospital.
These camps gave the cadets an opportunity to put some shine into their personalities. On the physical front, the cadets participated in such activities as firing and drills, underwent adventure training and ran across obstacle courses. On an intellectual level, the cadets were exposed to the latest trends and thinking in such fields as fire-fighting, protection of the environment, water harvesting, disaster management, AIDS and drug abuse.
These annual training camps also had their moments of thrill in the form of trekking, para sailing, backwater sailing expeditions, windsurfing, skeet shooting and glider flying. Cultural activities and programmes designed to generate awareness about the need for national integration, also formed part of these training camps.
There were prominent visitors to these camps - the regional deputy director general of the NCC, Brig. N.P.R Pillai, and the group commander, Col. V. P.R. Pillai. With the conclusion of the two camps on Friday, all eight battalions of the NCC in the region would have undergone training at the annual training camps.
