With an eye on quality

The Nellore-based Bollineni Eye Hospital and Research Centre has become the first eye hospital to obtain the prestigious ISO 9001: 2000 certification in the State.
The British Standards Institution, an independent accreditation body, has evaluated the quality management system of the hospital and confirmed that they meet the well-laid international standards. The certification has enabled the hospital to join the select group of organisations, which practice standards formulated by the International Organisation for Standardisation, Switzerland.
According to the Managing Director of the hospital, N. Sai Murali, the certification has become essential criterion of evaluation for a patient on the quality of treatment expected from a medical institution, especially in the Indian context, where no accreditation system of health care facilities exist.
The certification would ensure that the patient-centred systems and procedures remain quality focussed and evolve continuously to provide better forms of eye treatment and help reinforce services aiding faster patient recovery.
Started just 14 months ago, the hospital has got a team of seven specialist ophthalmologists and the centre has become a boon for patients of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseeema.
Each employee of the hospital has been fully trained on quality requirements for their position.
The quality focus is evident by its `Mission for better vision' philosophy and its commitment for international standards.
In the first year of its inception, the hospital has treated more than 25,000 out patients, performed 5,000 `phaco emulsification cataract' surgeries and provided laser treatment to 1,000 diabetic patients.
The hospital is also recognised as the `Best eye hospital' by the Lions Clubs International Foundation for the year 2003-2004, informed Dr. Sai Murali.
