Well-conceived.
IT IS not just another entertainment portal. The www.madurai4u.com is a blend of information and interaction. Conceptualised by the Dotcom Infoway, the portal was launched in Madurai on Wednesday. Besides a variety of options such as free e-mail identity, chatting, tips on beauty/cookery, tourism information and cinema stuff, the portal offers weekly interactive slots with leading doctors, educationists, industrialists and local personalities.
A team of software professionals worked for months to create the 200-page-plus portal that will guide young entrepreneurs into business avenues of Information Technology. The immediate plans include organising `darshan' for tourists, particularly foreigners and north Indians, at the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.
On the health pages, the portal enables visitors to post their questions pertaining to various ailments. The queries would be forwarded to experts in the respective fields and answers made available on the site within 72 hours.
"The idea is to provide wholesome interactive entertainment and information to the visitors. We also plan to have an elaborate movie and news sections. One can feel the pulse of Madurai youth on this portal," says the Dotcom Infoway Chief Executive Officer, C.R. Venkatesh, adding that C. Ramasubramniam, a leading psychiatrist in Madurai, had agreed to take questions on mental health.
The guest for the first online chatting on the inaugural day was V.V. Balaji Viswanathan, a product of the Madurai-based Thiagarajar College of Engineering and nominee for the `Young Inventors Award, 2003.' He took questions from students. While explaining his innovative approach to anti-missile defence, data storage on computers and traffic management, the budding scientist also spoke on the progress of his research to invent a compact disc with a capacity 20 terabytes.
"This is only a beginning and we will soon have features like round-the-clock online chat support, regularly updated news columns and career guidance. An employment section will be created in which job seekers and employers can post their requirements," adds Mr. Venkatesh.
The portal provides link to `www.galatta.com', a movie portal managed by the same group, to take visitors through volumes of information on the Tinsel Town and provide them an opportunity to chat with matinee idols.
The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association president, K. Ramachandran, clicked `www.madurai4u.com' into the web world at a simple function. The Chief Operations Officer of Dotcom Infoway, Girish Ramdas, was also present.
