Damp fare at the Filmfare

Vikram receiving the Filmfare best actor award from Telugu actor Venkatesh.

WHAT LASTS over four hours, offers no surprises, hardly has any great lines or moments and a Vivek comedy track that takes digs at portly people?

Well, the award goes to: The 51st edition of Filmfare awards held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

First, the "moments" of the show. The lifetime achievements to K. J Yesudas and Vijayashanthi and the standing ovation (requested by Vivek) that followed. The highlight being the tight hug which Kamal Hasan gave Yesudas and the words of appreciation that lent a warm feeling to an otherwise cold evening and Vijayashanthi's speech in Telugu thanking people for helping her hold her own in a male-dominated industry for 25 years.

The other scenes that made `Manikchand Filmfare Awards night' interesting viewing: A clean-shaven Vikram thanking director Bala for helping him win two out of his three Filmfare best actor awards, after a mega-introduction by Vivek; Suriya pointing out that his two films `Kaakha Kaakha' and `Pithamagan' had won 10 awards; the response Prakashraj generated when he came on to say that he loved the award so much that it came back to him; Bala saying that he had to thank the people who chose him that forced Filmfare to give the award to him; Jayaram dedicating his award to veteran actress Sheela, Jeevan's (Best villain, Kaakha Kaakha) candid admission of getting his first award ever; Laila's Tamil, Ramba's catchy top (It said: Private, Keep Off Property), Sneha's shimmering saree, and Jyotika's `Kaakha Kaakha' medley.

Though the list seems long, the event by itself wasn't exactly engaging. Here's why: a) There were no nominations to play with the minds of the audience during the ceremony. b) The results had been made public long before the awards ceremony. c) The stars who turned up, instead of doing their 30-seconds of a touching `Thank You' for the honour, only came up to loudly recollect the number of times they were taking home the award with a "I-anyway-get-this-every-year" feel. d) The usually funny Vivek, who has potential to be a Steve Martin-at-the-Oscars, had a 40 per cent success rate with his jokes with most of them being tongue-in-cheek comments about his co-anchor Anju's appearance. e) There was hardly any variety in the performances - all of them chose Rahman numbers from `Aayitha Ezhuthu' and `New,' the only exception, Jyotika did what was a promotional spot for `Kaakha Kaakha.' None of the heroes (with the exception of Vineet) was sportive enough to perform.
