Gender to the fore
THE GENERAL budget is always viewed with hope. It can never fulfil the hopes and aspirations of all sections. But none can deter people from rallying round a point in the post-budget analyses.
At such an analysis organised by Shakti, a women's movement, the fair sex did not see much of a gender bias in the budget.
Is there a need for a gender budgeting was the question that came foremost in the minds of the men who participated in it. In fact, it was moderated by a male journalist. Why should women wait for any largesse, he asked.
The women did make their point that schemes should be aimed at women's welfare. Some of the points stressed by the participants were quite noteworthy. The man who sells fish goes around in a bicycle or a scooter while the fisherwoman walks all the way to sell the catch. The early bird advantage naturally goes to the man.
These and other questions did make sense though answers could hardly be found. May be, it was precisely because of such a situation that the organisers wanted a budget favourable not only to the Left or the Right, but the centre of the family, that is the women.
