Virumaandi gets Korean award

ACTOR KAMAL Haasan's Virumaandi, won the Best Asian Film Award of the year at the Puchon International Fantastic film festival (PiFan), South Korea.

PiFan held in Puchon, one of the satellite cities of Seoul, and famous for its strong support for film and animation industry, screened 261 films in nine cinema halls. This year, Kamal Haasan was invited to participate in the festival for the screening of his film, Virumaandi.

"There were 19 films in the category competing for the award. The judges were all European and I did not think I would win. I was thrilled when my name was announced. There was also another film from India, Raghu Romeo. I was excited to get this kind of welcome for my film."

The citation given to the film said the first European Federation of Film Festival award went to a film, which "successfully managed to combine social and political drama, romance, humour, music and spectacular action in one story."

Apart from Kamal Haasan, the cast included Abirami, Nasser, Pasupathi, Rohini and V.K.T. Balan. Cinematography was by Kesav Prakash, while Ilayaraja scored the music.
