Mission Tahr
The Nilgiri thar has always fascinated Prasad Ambat.
A freelance photographer, Prasad Ambat, is on his next mission. After publishing his first photo book - `Reminiscence from Goat's Own Country' - on the life of Nilgiri tahr, a rare caprinae species that is on the verge of extinction, during all the four seasons.
The Nilgiri tahr, once on the verge of extinction, is conserved in the national parks of Eravikulam, Silent Valley and the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary in the State.
Eravikulam is the abode of this mountain caprinae in India.
Declared a national park in 1978, Eravikulam is home to the largest viable population of the Nilgiri tahr today.
Mr. Prasad, born and brought up in Munnar, described as `Goat's own country', is a renowned wildlife photographer who has keenly followed the Nilgiri tahr for the past 25 years.
A keen wildlife enthusiast, his unflinching professional commitment has earned him many an admirer from various walks of life.
His book on tahr was appreciated by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It contains about 40 photographs of tahr, in its habitat.
The President in his letter to G. Shaheed, secretary of The Nilgiri Tahr Foundation on May 24, described the book as "well edited and presented with a mission of saving the mountain goats''.
Mr. Prasad is now engaged in the work of his second book that covers the tahr habitat, their ecology and behaviour during the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter.
