Evoking inherent experiences
A video still from Surekha's work
IT IS not new to use the medium of video to express your thoughts. Anand Patwardhan, well- known documentary filmmaker, used this medium to produce several documentaries, with each focussing on a socially relevant issue. While his Bombay our City focused on street dwellers and In the name of God focused on religious fundamentalism, War and Peace, the recent one, focused on the hazards of nuclear energy.
Another artist Surekha is also using the same medium.
She uses it to focus on social issues and human relations in general, and issues concerning women and their identity in particular. Her works are being exhibited on September 23 and 24 at Galleryske on St. Marks Road.
Surekha, a fine arts student from the Ken School of Art, in her present works exhibited in the city, blends video and physical presence of the artist in various ways and in different situations, to evoke inherent experiences.
By using some symbols for feminine resistance, she questions the usual symbols employed to portray it. One such work is titled Bhagirathi - bringing water, in which a video still shows a woman wearing a black dress in a water tub filled with rose petals and other flowers.
