The lure of the vanilla gold has landed hundreds of farmers in deep trouble in Kerala. In the context of a farming crisis on several fronts, they went in for the new cash crop attracted by the prices the commodity used to fetch in the international m arkets until two years ago and the hype created by certain lobbies. Investment levels were high, but prices nose-dived as the crop was ready for harvest. This is but a repeat of what happened with cocoa in the past. The Government promoted its cultiv ation after multinational interests got to work, holding it out to be a promising crop. But soon enough, farmers found that they could not recoup even the input costs. What lesson does the vanilla fiasco hold for the farmers and the Government? Reade
