Kamal, on his birthday.
THAMIZHAGA KAMAL Haasan Narpani Iyakkam and well-wishers of Kamal Haasan celebrated the actor's birthday with plenty of fanfare.
The actor started his day by lighting the lamp in front of his parents' photographs, which were kept in his office.
The large gathering wanted him to speak and he obliged. Kamal announced his next film, "Mumbai Express," and said it would be shot in two languages, Tamil and Hindi.
Singeetam Srinivasa Rao will direct the film and the Tamil version will have Nasser, Pasupathi and Vaiyapuri. The name of his character in the film is Avinasi. The Hindi version will have Mahesh Manjrekar, Om Puri and Shourab Shukla, who will also write the dialogue for the Hindi film. Music is by Ilaiyaraaja. The other cast and credits are being finalised. Both the films are to be produced by Rajkamal Films International.
But why did he not direct it? He replied that the film had been given to an experienced person. "Moreover, as I am acting in both the languages and will soon take up a project with Roja Combines, I cannot do justice if I take up direction. As this film is a breezy comedy with sentiment and action I think it is safe in the hands of Singeetam Srinivasa Rao."
The shooting will start in 10 days and the release is planned for April the same time when Sivaji Productions "Chandra Mukhi" starring Rajnikant is also slated to hit the cinemas.
Kamal Haasan did not think that the title of his film, "Mumbai Express" will get him into problems. "I do not foresee any problems. I know all the Tamil loving people including Mr. Thirumavalaavan. I have also read his writings. They are all my good friends." Kamal Haasan said that he had participated in the agitation against imposition of Hindi and was ready to oppose it even today.
Would he act in Sivaji Productions "Chandra Mukhi" with Rajnikant? "If my brother (Prabhu is the producer and Kamal usually calls Sivaji as his father) asks me why not, as it is my father's production house?"
The actor said that an influential former politician from North India had come forward to help the schools in Tamil Nadu through his Narpani Iyakkam. The person prefers anonymity. He said that his poetry would be brought out in book form very soon and in another four years time one can see his golden jubilee year in films.
"Whether I am there or not, the Narpani Iyakkam must continue to function and do service to society," Kamal added.
Kamal Haasan distributed the prizes to the winners of Annai Rajalakshmi Memorial elocution contest for college students, held last Saturday in the presence of actress Gowthami.
The first prize of Rs. 5000 went to Mahesh, student of Bishop Xavier College, Tiruchi, the second prize of Rs. 2500 went to Ramya, Jay science College, Chennai and Ramananthan of Government law College, Madurai got the third prize of Rs. 1000. Raja from Chidambaram, Shanthi and Rajasekar, both from Chennai received Rs. 500 each as consolation prizes.
Apart from this Kamal Haasan also handed nearly Rs. 1.25 lakhs to various other organisations and individuals who had done social service.
