The Salarjung Museum will offer more facilities to visitors in the days to come, assured Governor, Sushilkumar Shinde, who is the chairman of the Museum Board.

Inaugurating the 119th birthday celebrations of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, the Museum founder, popularly known as Salar Jung III, on Saturday, Mr. Shinde complimented the staff for the immaculate maintenance of the museum. He, however, asked them to pay attention to the preservation of artefacts, particularly paintings and statutes that could deteriorate over time.

Founder's qualities

Mr. Shinde, who went round the museum and later chaired the board meeting, expressed surprise at the wide collection of Salar Jung and described him as a connoisseur of art with a sound knowledge, coupled with a sharp memory and passion for artefacts. "The literature collected by him on sufism is amazing and so are the artefacts," the Governor said.

The Pune link

Mr. Shinde was happy to learn that Salar Jung III had a close association with Pune and said he was proud of it as he came from Maharashtra. Salar Jung was truly secular in his approach to education and social functions. He celebrated Id-ul-Fitr with the same enthusiasm as Dasara or Diwali, the Governor said.

Nawab Ahtram Ali Khan, a close kin of the Salar Jung family, spoke about the life and times of museum founder. Museum director, A.K.V.S. Reddy, welcomed the gathering.
