Disney joins `toon war'

CHILDREN AND — let's be honest — many parents enjoy the cartoon channels. Their numbers are increasing; we mean the television channels.

The latest to enter the scene are Disney Channel and Toon Disney, about to hit the small screens on Friday.

Some of the programmes will be locally produced, we are told.

Toon Disney will be a 24-hour Tamil and Telugu channel and Disney Channel will be in Hindi. Don't despair if you are not familiar with these languages; both will be provided with an optional English "feed" in markets such as Bangalore.

The programming schedule will include almost 400 episodes of local production, representing the single largest localisation commitment by an international broadcaster.

The channel says it will set new standards in providing entertainment for the whole family by scheduling about 60 movies each month, including some of the most celebrated Disney animated and live action features.

Disney Channel will come with originally produced programmes for both children and families these will include specials, sitcoms, family dramas, live action adventure stories and movies.

Toon Disney will be the true home of animation built from the best cartoons from the Disney and Saban archives, all with the Disney hallmark in story telling. Walt Disney Television International has signed a deal with Star Group to distribute the Disney channels in India.

Many of us have grown up with Disney cartoons and animated films and for some, they were the only kind of entertainment allowed by parents.

Some of the animated and live films from the Disney stable are considered classics in their genre.
