Film world reaches out to the distressed

Vijaykant with the victims of tsunami

THE TSUNAMI literally brought hundreds of people to the streets. But film directors and stars were out on the streets for a different reason. A team led by `Captain' went to Nagercoil for relief work. Vijaykant has announced a donation of Rs. 10 lakhs for the victims in Tamil Nadu and another Rs. 2 lakhs for those affected in Pondicherry. The amounts will be handed over to the Chief Ministers soon.

Rajnikant and Kamal Haasan have announced a contribution of Rs. 21 lakhs each to the Chief Ministers Public Relief Fund.

Kamal Haasan, busy in Mumbai with his bilingual film Mumbai Express, will visit Chennai to personally handover the amount to the Chief Minister.

Rajnikant, shooting for Chandra Mukhi in Bangalore, will be here on January 3.

Actor-director Parthiban visited the affected parts of Chennai and distributed clothes, biscuits and 10,000 water sachets.

Accompanied by his children Keerthana and Ramakrishnan, he went door-to-door collecting money till Thursday.

Director Bharathi Raja and his colleagues have begun collecting relief material from the public in Chennai. Ramesh Khanna, Cheran, Nasser, S.J. Surya and a host of others accompanied him through the crowded Ranganathan street at T. Nagar.

TV stars chip in

Television stars under the banner of the Small Screen Actors Association are planning to donate a day's pay to the relief fund.

The association along with the Small Screen Writers Association and Small Screen Directors Association held a condolence meeting. It plans to take to the streets on January 2 to collect money and relief articles.
