Yet another TV rehash?

Starsky and Hutch

(English)

THE 1970s were the years of the TV cop. American and British TV viewers were treated to a procession of serials - Magnum PI, Remington Steele, The Rockford Files, The Untouchables, Starsky and Hutch. The first is being rerun for Indian audiences. The last has popped up in a big screen version with two of today's comic stars in the title roles of what appears to be a `prequel' to the original small screen series. Starsky and Hutch (Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson) are a couple of misfit cops who stumble on cocaine dealer Reese Fledman (Vince Vaughan) who has discovered a form of narcotic that is odourless and so can fool sniffer dogs. The duo and their supervisor (Fred Williamson) inhabit a mythical American town called Bay City, whose criminal underbelly is known only to the police informant Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg). The film is one long running gag - and even for audiences here who might not have seen the original series and hence have no nostalgic memories, it works on the level of undemanding comedy actioners like Beverly Hills Cop - minus the foul language.
