Cultural heritage on small screen
ONE COULD spend a lifetime exploring Hindustani cultural heritage and still yearn for some more. Now Jhankar TV -- the country's first channel dedicated to India's rich culture, musical heritage and lifestyle -- will be bringing into our drawing rooms glimpses of India's vast musical heritage on February 26.
As the Chief Managing Director of Jhankar TV, Zaheer Ahmed, puts it, "We all happen to read about the glorious past of our country, the major events, and about the growth of our society. But the knowledge imparted is either distorted or presented in a manner that the happening loses its charm. We intend to fill the vacuum through our brilliantly packaged musical programmes which would be showcasing the vivid colours of India's rich musical heritage". This channel is being promoted by Hamara Samay TV News Networks Private Limited, which will be embarking on the field of entertainment for the first time.
Time slots for its different programmes would be made in such a way that 60 per cent of the airtime will go to Hindi music, 30 per cent to Punjabi music and the remaining 10 per cent to Western music. Muzaffar Ali, who has been working single-handedly to revive Sufi music in the country, says television has now become a part of our life and the concept of delivering high-value information on our traditions is fabulous.
