The fascinating world of animation

TO INTRODUCE the fascinating world of animation to impressionable young minds, television channel Animax organised a workshop for children for the first time at Cambridge Public School in New Delhi this past Monday.

The idea behind the workshop was to tap the huge potential of animation as a career option not only for students but also art teachers. Nearly 200 students -- aged between eight and 14 years -- and art teachers of Cambridge Public School took part in the workshop.

The basic forms in animation, key elements, drawing tips and also the transformation of these drawings to screen were taught to the students. Exercises were also conducted for practical exposure. Kids were shown different types of animation.

The workshop was conducted by the animation director at Visual Computing Labs, Shrirang Sathaye. "Teaching animation to children is a unique experience in itself since they come with their own set of skills and creativity which is different from adults. I appreciate the efforts of Animax in taking such an initiative and am proud to be a part of it. Such workshop will not only promote animation as a career option among the children but also help them to appreciate the art of animation," said Mr. Sathaye.

The workshop is a two-phase activity. While the first phase of the workshop took place simultaneously in New Delhi and Bangalore, the second phase will be conducted in Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad on February 18 and 19.

"This could be the beginning of a new phase in Indian education. We are witnessing an animation boom in our country with many Western productions outsourcing animation to India. India could well be the next greatest destination for animation Industry," said the Assistant Vice-President for Sales and Marketing, Animax and AXN, Rohit Bhandari.
