A Rambo punch on MGM

JUST IMAGINE the "reel" boxing legend Sylvester Stallone presenting a show on "fisticuffs". Well, this is not a flight of fancy but an actual television series titled "The Contender" which will be shown on AXN India at 9 p.m. beginning this Thursday. Stallone along with Olympiad champion Sugar Ray Leonard will guide and evaluate 16 pugilists, who have all been short-listed from the U.S., as they face off one another in the ring.

The winner, who will be decided in the grand finale at Las Vegas, will walk home with a boxing contract, a one-million-dollar prize and a professional title. Professional fighters under the watchful eyes of their boxing mentors would undergo intense training that would culminate in a series of bouts where friendships and rivalries would be put to test.

Sharing his thoughts on the show, Stallone said: "This is not just a show, it is about the personality of the boxers. This is a show about their lives, their loves and their fears. Boxers also face problems that are usually confronted by a non-boxer."

Leonard, who has five boxing titles under his belt, said: "Lot of boxing fans will enjoy the show. I know exactly what these young men are dealing with; their trails and tribulations and their dreams to become a world champion."

According to the Assistant Vice-President for Marketing and Sales, AXN, India, Rohit Bhandari, "this will be one of the first heavy-duty action pact reality show that will provide the Indian audiences with exciting boxing bouts."
