Robin's day out

Mobbed by autograph hunters.

THE THIAGARAJAR College of Engineering has a knack of roping in personalities to grace campus events. Each year, it brings in a celebrity on during the Annual Sports Day.

If it was former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth the year before last, it was tennis great Ramesh Krishnan last year. This year too they had a celebrity visiting the campus. He is a fitness fad and was considered the fittest cricketer on field when he played for the country.

He is none other than Rabindra `Robin' Ramnarayan Singh, former Indian cricketer and current coach of the Hong Kong cricket team. Of course, there was a buzz around the college right from the moment news of Robin Singh's arrival broke out.

"It was not easy to get the appointment of a celebrity. Robin Singh assured us of his visit only last Thursday. Now he is here," R. Kalidasan, Director of Physical Education, admitted proudly.

Even as a cricketer, Robin Singh inspired and motivated fellow players on the field with his performance and off the field with his conduct. And as a chief guest of the college event, his effervescent presence brought cheers all around and rejuvenated everyone. His presence attracted students from other colleges too. The handsome star was unflappable at the posse of questions thrown at him during the press conference. The West Indian-born sportsman was as pragmatic as ever. He was very clear in his views and showed that he had learnt the game the hard way.

He appeared more than happy to be the coach of the Hong Kong cricket team and showered encomiums on Hong Kong cricket. "It is all in the mindset of cricketers. For a place, which has an age-old history behind its cricket, it is only a matter of time before Hong Kong makes its entry into the big league," he said. Earlier, Robin Singh visited Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. He was impressed by its grandeur and the hospitality of the temple authorities.

It was a memorable day for individuals such as the principal of the college, V. Abhai Kumar, who is an ardent sportslover.
