A showcase of technology

A THREE-DAY exhibition-cum-conference titled "13th Convergence India 2005" showcasing convergent technologies of over 300 telecommunication and information technology majors from 25 countries will open at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi this Tuesday.

Co-sponsored by the Union Ministry for Communications and Information Technology, the exhibition-cum-conference is South Asia's largest communication event for new generation networks and the idea is to facilitate interaction among industry leaders, investors and government officials.

Besides providing a platform to hold discussions on converging technologies by stimulating new ideas and offering cost-effective solutions, the exhibition-cum-conference will see the participation of the country's largest telecommunication companies like Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, Bharti and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

At a press conference on Monday, the Managing Director of Exhibitions India, Prem Behl, said: "Communication is the lifeblood of economic growth of a country and is an infrastructural requirement even in rural areas. Convergence India has brought together conceptualisers, developers and executors like technology specialists, industrialists, buyers, sellers and visitors to initiate a dialogue on technologies and services of tomorrow."

The event organised by Exhibitions India, an ISO 9001: 2000-certified company, is expected to witness major business initiatives, technology transfers, agreements, joint ventures and new services.

The Director Sales-Asia of Scientific Atlanta, Brent Smith, shared the optimism of the other speakers that India has an enormous potential for connectivity and broadband. "The Indian Government must regulate to ensure a level playing field for private sector developers," added Mr. Smith.

While the Director of System Engineering-Asia Pacific, Ben Cardwell, expressed satisfaction over the launch of technologies like GSM, the Country Head of Veroz Networks, Yogesh S. Bijlani, said the current year would witness telecommunication giants like Bharti and Reliance opening up new call centres whose services would be utilised by multinational companies

A number of technology leaders from countries like Belgium, Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea and Malaysia are participating in the show with world-class products.
