AVM production house to be divided again
A PRESTIGIOUS film production house of the South, `AVM', is getting ready for a third partition. M. Saravanan and M.Balasubramaniam, sons of the founder of the production house, A. V. Meiyappan, have now decided to divide their assets. Talks are on and a clear picture will be known in a few weeks, sources close to the family said. There is basic agreement that all of them are entitled to use the AVM logo, the sources noted. Mr. Saravanan, along with his son M. S. Guhan and Mr. Balasubramaniam are now jointly producing serials for television.
Late A. V. Meiyappan had four sons: M. Murugan, M. Kumaran, M. Saravanan and M. Balasubramaniam. The partnership firm was first divided in 1978 by Murugan. Then Kumaran got his share in 1984. At that time itself the studios and other assets were divided into three parts.
Now the third division is in the offing.
AVM one of the popular film producing companies in South India and has so far produced 166 films and several television serials.
The house started its first film "Alli Arjuna" in 1935. AVM studio was born in Karaikudi in 1945 and the first film, which was shot in the studios, was "Nam Iruvar". When the Karaikudi studio was gutted in a fire, Meiyappan bought a piece of land in Kodambakkam and named it AVM Studios.
The first film to be shot there was "Vazhkkai".
Five Chief Ministers have been associated with AVM at different points of time.
It was Annadurai who wrote the dialogues of "Oor Iravu" in 1950. "Parasakthi" had the dialogues of M. Karunanidhi. Some of the films acted by N. T. Rama Rao were "Bhookailass" and "Ramu".
And MGR acted in only one film and that was "Anbe Vaa". Chief Minister Jayalalithaa acted in four films produced by AVM: "Manmoji", "Major Chandrakanth", "Enga Mama" and "Anathai Anandan".
Meiyappan entered Hindi films with "Bahar", a remake of "Vazhkai".
Later on, he produced a number of Hindi films such as "Bhai Bhai", "Chori Chori", "Bap Bete", "Barka", "Bindhiya", "Chaya", "Mye Chup Rahongi", "My Be Ladki Ho" and "Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke", which got the President's best children's film award.
