Hariharan's 50th birthday bash

Hariharan is joined by actor Vijay at "Isayodu Pirandhen," a music performance.

HOW BETTER to celebrate the 50th birthday of a singer than to get him to sing?

Vijay TV struck the right note as it decided to celebrate Colonial Cousins' Hariharan's 50th birthday, with him singing to a Chennai crowd.

Never mind that it was a sedate Chennai crowd that sat through "Isayodu Pirandhen". They were present in large numbers and amazingly well-behaved on a Saturday night. Never mind if you landed up on dusty plastic chairs in the wings of the Royapettah Grounds and could only see Hari on the CC-TV-screen. It just matters that wherever you were, you could hear Hari's voice.

Especially singing some of the most popular hit numbers that he has rendered for Kollywood and its stars. Though the mix of songs could have been better placed to get the crowd on its feet, there were certainly no complaints about the quality of music. With Hariharan enthralling the audience with his ghazal-trained voice for about three hours, the audience lasted nearly the whole while. That, certainly, is saying something about the quality of the show.

They looked for and were not disappointed as Hariharan sang some of his best numbers for the Tamil film industry, including "Ariya Uthadugal," "Malargale," "Ennai Thalatta Varuvalo," "Thottal Poo Malarum."

His colleagues from the industry turned up either on stage, or on the side screens to wish him on his birthday and request that he sing their favourite songs. While a bearded S.P. Balasubramaniam, Vijay, Rohini (the compere) and Khusboo turned up on stage, the virtual line up included Vikram, Ilayaraja, S.J. Suryah, Devyani, Prashanth and director Susi Ganesan among others. Singers including Pavatharini, Srinivas, Tipu, Mahathy, Sujatha, Harini, Chitra honourably accompanied the master on stage, or went it alone, adding to the charm of the evening.

An evening in which Hari managed to pack two lines from a ghazal and a medley from all his songs, to make up for not singing them all. There is only so much you can do in three hours, after all. A well-spent three hours though, participating in the birthday celebrations a talented ghazal/pop/playback singer with an amazing voice.
