Reva launches next generation electric car

The Reva-NXG

REVA-NXG, THE next generation electric car developed by Reva Electric Car Co of Bangalore, has been going places. Information received from Monaco says that the Reva variant was launched there on Monday at the International Electric Vehicles Symposium.

The new concept car is the result of collaboration between Reva; Dilip Chhabria, automobile designer; and Encore Software, Simputer developer. The car, its makers say, demonstrates India's effectiveness in integrating electric vehicle technology, design, telematics and manufacturing expertise in a cost effective manner.

Reva NXG is a two-seater with an extended range of 200 km. per charge and a speed that can reach 120 km. per hour.

It is powered by a high performance 37 KW AC induction motor that drives the front wheels and uses sodium nickel chloride batteries instead of conventional lead-acid batteries, for extended life.

Its 40-wheel independent suspension with integrated regenerative and hydraulic braking system provides good handling and braking.

The car is fitted with a "wireless tablet," an embedded appliance that integrates into a high resolution single touch-screen display system all dashboard functions such as speed, state of charge, range and critical sensor inputs as well as personal communication tools such as GPS-based in-vehicle navigation, a GPRS modem for internet and e-mail and MP3 music.

In his message, the Deputy Chairman of Reva, Chetan Maini, said: "We have three of the best in business coming together to showcase India's capabilities. This concept car takes us one step forward in developing new EV technologies and serves as a long-term solution to pollution and transportation problems.''

The Union Minister for Science and Technology, Kapil Sibal, who was in Monaco, said: "Reva's new concept car is truly a technical marvel which promotes alternative fuel technology in India and abroad. With global warming and congestion and pollution continuously rising in cities around the world, it becomes necessary for us to support and embrace such technologies.''

The body of the concept car has been designed by Dilip Chhabria Design Pvt. Ltd. to appeal to the youth market with its aggressive, bold, sharp and chiseled features.

Vinay Deshpande, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Encore Software, said the embedded systems technology integrated into the electric car's dashboard is perhaps the first example of a fully graphic, in-vehicle display system.
