Putting a damper on your routine

The southwest monsoon brings with it its own set of woes. With the rain likely to strengthen in the coming days, city residents are bracing for a season of power disruptions, waterlogged roads, overflowing drains and drenched mornings in office.

The monsoon is proving to be a damper for those who prefer to start their day with a walk. The crowds have dwindled at Museum grounds, Kanakakkunnu Palace and Shanghumughom beach, the widely patronised walking circuits in the city. However, there are quite a few ardent walkers whom even the rain cannot deter.

For schoolchildren, it is an occasion to flaunt their newly acquired umbrellas and trendy rainwear. It is also the time for them to launch paper boats in fast-flowing storm water drains and indulge in a whole array of rain games.

Office-goers and pedestrians are among those most affected by the rain. Pedestrians often find themselves at the mercy of motorists who drive at high speeds through waterlogged roads.

There is a high incidence of accidents involving two-wheelers during the monsoon. Reduced visibility and slippery roads are the main reasons for the spurt of accidents, according to the Traffic Police.

For those residing in the flood-prone areas of Thiruvananthapuram, particularly East Fort and Thampanoor, the monsoon often proves to be a harrowing experience.

For the urban poor, the storm waters bring a unique opportunity to angle for fish in the swollen canals criss-crossing the city.

The rain has brought cheer to traders retailing umbrellas and rainwear; umbrella-making companies have launched several products this year, including parasols equipped with torches. It has also brought brisk business to `tandoori' and `kebab' outlets in the city.
