Sakuntala in a new light
Sakuntala in a different light - that is going to be the striking feature of `Vanajyotsna,' the latest dance choreographed by Lissy Muraleedharan. Ms. Lissy, a native of Mahe, has already made a mark in dance circles with her programme `Onakkilikal,' which was also inspired by a poem by that name written by Kadathanatt Madhavi Amma. `Vanajyotsna' is based on a poem by the same name penned by K.T. Kumaran Master.
"A poem is born in the imagination of the poet; dance is expressing it through aesthetically pleasing movements," says Lissy.
She is quite excited about the new venture. Not only because she has choreographed it with meticulous care but also because Chemancherry Kunhniraman Nair, veteran kathakali maestro who is revered as one of the greatest and senior-most artistes, would appear as Sage Viswamithra in it.
Lissy also emphasises that her dance is an attempt to see Kalidasa's `Sakuntala' in a new light. Lissy runs Natya Kala Khetram and Performing Arts at Mahe where she gives dance lessons to nearly 300 girls, some of them foreigners.
Harippad K.P.N. Pillai has scored the music and the songs are sung by V.T. Murali. Lissy's latest dance programme `Vanajyotsna' will go on stage later this month.
