Providing a fresh perspective to environmental education
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
For Uma Devi and her colleague Dhanalakshmi, the trip from Virudhunagar to Chennai was worth the trouble.
Both teachers at the P.S. Chidambara Nadar Senior English School, Kamarajar District, were attending the one-day seminar on "Environmental Education in Schools" conducted on Saturday at St. John's International Residential School (SJIRS) for CBSE school teachers from all over the State. "We already teach environmental studies as part of Biology but this seminar is useful in giving us fresh perspectives on teaching the subject," they said.
Organised by SJIRS following the CBSE's move to introduce Environmental Education as a compulsory subject for all classes from I to XII from the current academic year, the seminar was presided over by Paul P. Appasamy, Economist and S. Theodore Bhaskaran, Historian.
The former Post-Master General of Tamil Nadu, was the chief guest. Teachers from about 44 CBSE schools from Tamil Nadu had registered for the seminar, R. Kishore Kumar, senior principal, SJIRS said.
Sessions were held on "Environmental Education for School Teachers", "Sustainable Development", " Environmental Ethics", "Web-based Environmental Education" and " How to teach Environmental Education in Schools".
Dr. Appasamy spoke of the relevance of teaching environmental studies at schools, and making learning empirical. Mr. Bhaskaran said environmental education was necessary to help students decide if the toll taken on the environment in the name of development was worth the price.
