Now, insulin pumps to the aid of diabetics

Thiruvananthapuram: Paradigm insulin pumps, the most modern device used in the treatment of diabetes, have come to Kerala. The device, which is currently used by over four lakh Americans, has been introduced here by the group of doctors led by Jothydev Kesavadev, city-based diabetes consultant.

Diabetes patients who require insulin can lead a life as normal as that of non-diabetic people by using the insulin pump. For young children and teenagers with juvenile diabetes, those who cannot do without sugar and for active senior citizens, treatment using the insulin pump would be beneficial. The pump is about as big as a pager. Though insulin pumps will simplify the treatment of diabetes, this method can be adopted only by the affordable group as the pump alone costs over Rs. 2 lakhs.

Also, the medicine, infusion set, battery, etc., will cost another Rs. 10,000 every month.
