Prestigious award: C. Arumugam, the printer, with the award.
A RE-CREATION of Sophocles' "Oedipus the King", 2500 years after it won its first award at the Athens drama festival, by an unlikely crew from India has received a series of prestigious awards in the United States, from the American Association of Museums, the Association of American University Presses, San Francisco-based Bookbuilders West and the University and College Designers Association (UCDA).
Written, illustrated and produced by Chennai-based Tara Publishing for the Paul Getty Museum, Oedipus the King is made completely by hand. Each page of the book is handprinted on handmade paper, making every page an original print. The book has been celebrated across the U.S. for its faithfulness to the spirit of the original, while recreating the art of fine bookmaking for the contemporary reader.
This was possibly the most unusual collaboration the Getty has ever entered into, in order, as the Museum puts it, to "break new ground by presenting a classic myth in a format that reflects the spirit of ancient craftsmanship."
