Ask the Doc...

Bedwetting

Advice and suggestions from our panel of doctors in response to readers' queries.

Name withheld:

My son is 11 years old. He still wets the bed during nights not regularly but frequently, mostly during winter when he goes to bed without going to the bathroom. He is not feeling insecure and all of us are very free and affectionate with him. Please suggest some remedies.

Dr. Prema Shankar, Consultant Paediatrician, replies:

Since the child is 11 years old; it would be advisable to do a urine examination- to rule out any urinary infection-as well as an ultra sound of the abdomen to check for any anomalies of the kidney and the urinary bladder. If these causes are ruled out and if you say that your child is emotionally secure and happy ; then you have to reinforce Toilet Training , which requires a lot of patience and perseverance on your part as the parent. There are also allopathic drugs like Oxybutynin, which can be given, at a doctor's behest. In addition, there are some Ayurvedic remedies, which have proved useful in such cases.
