Namita on 'Shakuntala'
HER matter-of-fact attitude disarms you. At a launch to mark the publication of her new novel Shakuntala: The Play of Memory, author NAMITA GOKHALE said that she has never written about sex in a "sniggering manner". For Gokhale, who kicked up a storm in the late 1980s with her first book Paro, which had its reasonable share of steamy scenes, sexual identities form an integral part of the human psyche.
In her new book too, the protagonist Shakuntala is a woman who enjoys her sexual life with her husband. When later she falls in love with a Greek soldier there too she is equally demonstrative. According to Gokhale, the story is about Shakuntala's sexual destiny. Her book she adds takes off from the original Shakuntala but is the story of a "young woman who lived a long time ago."
