Shocking report

This refers to "The Sensex, Sania and starvation" (Magazine, September 18). With Anju Bobby George and Sania Mirza's achievements and the boom in the economy; we stood invincible. The Mumbai floods showed our ability to get back on our feet. But the HDR 2005 is a shocking state of affairs. One half is enjoying a superlative life, and the other is struggling to survive without any basic amenities. Is it not the government's responsibility to act on this?

C. Krishnadas,
Chennai

* * *

This is with reference to Kalpana Sharma's article. The heart-rending realities, particularly the number of deaths among children owing to malnutrition every year, should open our eyes to the conditions in our country. However the successive governments have been painting a very rosy picture about the "Progress" made under their respective dispensations. Statistics can be presented in more than one way to mislead the people about the obtaining realities.

Prof. K.S.S.Sarma,
Kurnool
