Sudden icons

With reference to Sevanti Ninan's "Attitude, Performance, Aspiration" (Magazine, September 11), the icons projected by TV channels are too subjective. Many sportspeople are given bonanzas at the taxpayers' expense, while the poor continue to remain poor. Many yesteryear sport heroes are ignored, some die unsung and unhonoured. Who cares?

We all come across Sachin and Sania more on media than on ground. We read of the Saurabh Singh-NASA dupery. Sevanti Ninan avers that national aspiration drives the media. But what on earth drives thisaspiration? Thanks for a thought provoking article,

Sevanti Nina's article made interesting reading. Look at what happened to Anna Kournikova. She is the perfect example of brand building. I sincerely hope Sania Mirza will concentrate on her tennis.
