Ravages of war

The short story "The Last Chapter" (Magazine, February 19) has very movingly portrayed the state of mind of a woman in war-ravaged Sri Lanka. Padma Narayanan has translated Kumaramoorthy's story from Tamil without bringing down the quality of narration. The way the story ends makes one wonder as to when the Island Nation will be truly free.

Jeyashree Jayaraman,
Coimbatore

The short story amply describes the fear with which the ethnic minorities are living in the north and east of Sri Lanka. Those who have read the story in Tamil would say that the translation is excellent since it does not make the readers feel as if they are reading a translated story.

S. Nallasivan,
Tirunelveli
