Real talent
THANK God for a lady who knows her mind and calls a spade a spade. LATA MANGESHKAR, who was recently spotted closing her ears against a pathetic rendition at a singing talent contest, has been categorical in challenging the growing popularity of musical talent shows that television audiences lap up. In a recent radio interview, Mangeshkar said that she found talent shows quite inappropriate since they neither promoted nor discovered original talent. "Real talent comes from the fact that you sing in your own voice and compose original compositions and get selected," said she. Coming down heavily on singing contests, Mangeshkar said that programmes like "`Indian Idol' and others were completely against the norm". She added that she could not even stand shows like "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa", and rued the fact that more people were using this as a means to fame. That, said Mangeshkar, is short-lived and not any indication of "real talent". Is anyone listening to the melody queen?
