Empowering women
Kalpana Sharma's "To the women of South Africa" (August 20) was delightfully readable. The women of South Africa constitute one-third of the country's parliament and nearly half of the central cabinet; yet they are victims of violence, rape and sex diseases. How can these women be truly independent, safe and healthy? This is the problem of women worldwide. I do not agree that if empowerment of women is assured in socio-economic and political fields, they will be really equal to men. I believe that the only way to ensure gender equality is a radical change of our mindset, in our attitude to women the "we" being used to mean both men and women. We have to look within and search our hearts and minds to locate ourselves in the timeless oppression of women.
R.P. Sharma,

Kalpana Sharma's letter was enthralling! The author has analysed the problem in a different thought-provoking angle. Leadership makes all the difference and it is unfortunate that we do not have many leaders who believe and work for women's equality and freedom. Men's self-interest dominates the cause.
