An eye opener
Vikram Kapur's "Another's wealth" (August 27) is an eye opener to male chauvinists. It is a pity that many people still consider the birth of girl as a curse and a liability. NGOs and the government should spread awareness among people especially in areas where female infanticide is prevalent.

The story is an eye opener for parents who curse the birth of a girl. If society and the parents realise the potential of girls, it will change attitudes that cause female foeticide.

Vikram Kapur's story is a stinging comment on the status of the girl in our society. A girl is often considered a burden on the parents, because of our mean social custom dowry. If one is allowed to quote the Mahatma a bit differently: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress should be judged the way the people treat the girl child."
Dr. R.K. Malhotra,
New Delhi
Vikram Kapur's story was touching. We want mothers, wives and sisters; but not daughters? It is a pity that even educated people do not understand that girls are not a liability. We should be proud of our daughters.

Vikram Kapur's story had a clear message for our gender-based society. The message is that attitude to girls depends on the parents attitude to life, not on their riches.
