Mumbai Dreams

AUTHOR SUKETU MEHTA seems to have notched a permanent place in the city that he loves so much. He's back promoting translations of his magnum opus, Maximum City, that has now become another catch phrase to define Mumbai. Mehta who believes that this is one city that "provides an opportunity for everyone to dream" said that the city had "multiple personalities. Everything about this city is true and false simultaneously". He said that it was people who had interesting stories to tell that motivated him to write. "My inspiration is the struggle of individual human beings against circumstances, political or otherwise." Mehta plans to donate part of the earnings from the book to a trust for the welfare of children. It is here that he almost despairs. "In this city children learn to beg even before they can walk." But even he admits that getting children out of the streets is an uphill task.
