Women bear the brunt
Kalpana Sharma's article poignantly pointed out how women are not safe anywhere, inside or outside the four walls of domesticity. We need to change this grim scenario and make efforts to make this world safe for women. In cases of migration due to work, war or marriage, why is it that women are called upon to bear the brunt? We cannot call ourselves civilised when such practices prevail.

The article "Forced departure" (September 17) is a telltale proof of exploitation of women. It is not only for jobs they venture outside the country but also to exhibit their status in society. The urban middle class still go in for American bridegrooms, though people get cheated and the women are abused in a foreign land beyond help. The long drawn-out court cases add to their woes. The concluding paragraph of the article was touching and conveyed the message. The biggest question is, will the society change? What is to be done to change the societal thinking? We face a biased society and it is a Herculean task to change basic outlooks.
